| A LOOK INSIDE: Summer Camp for Academically Talented Middle School Students |
Program provides scholastic, social outlet for gifted teens Every summer, Western Kentucky University’s campus becomes a temporary home to “gifted and talented” middle school students. Through SCATS, a summer camp tailored toward intellectually and creatively advanced teenagers, campers experience life on a college campus and classes that push their academic understanding and experience. For many of these campers, this is the first place they feel comfortable learning with their peers. Because of the high level of achievement required for acceptance to the program, campers are surrounded by students with similar academic backgrounds, as well as common interests and areas of excellence. Resident counselors, many of whom are alumni of the programs, help introduce the campers to social interaction they may lack at their homes. Some students in the program are home-schooled, while others have been bullied or isolated. Campers experience an environment of social acceptance where they form potentially lifelong friendships and counselors give back to the program they loved and are able to pass a positive message on to the new generation of SCATS campers.
